I am not sure how you all feel about genetically engineered foods but this is awful. Right now I try to avoid GMO produce as much as possible, I dont know what Id do if this were the next thing on the shelves to dodge. Granted livestock raising methods need to be changed and I dont believe in cruelty to animals but this is just disgusting. I am sure Monsanto will be all over this... meh ...
Million-Dollar Meat

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is offering a million-dollar prize for the “first person to come up with a method to produce commercially viable quantities of in vitro meat at competitive prices by 2012.” “In vitro” and “test-tube grown” are not ideas one usually associates with meat. The meat-substitute niche is currently occupied largely by soy in all its miraculous if slightly disappointing forms.
The announcement has apparently caused strife in PETA’s offices, where workers are debating whether they might ever eat animal tissue that has never been part of an autonomous animal. They’ll have some time to decide. So far, only a small amount of meat tissue has been grown in petri dishes — and it remains to be seen whether consumers will ever like the idea.
We are disgusted by the conventional meat industry in this country, which raises animals — especially chicken and pigs — in inhumane confinement systems that cause significant environmental damage. There is every reason to change the way meat is produced, to make it more ethical, more humane. But the result of the technology that PETA hopes to reward could be the end of domesticated farm animals. This has often seemed as if it were the logical conclusion of some radical animal-rights activists: better for animals not to exist at all if there is a chance that they would suffer.
We prefer a more measured approach. Ensure the least possible cruelty to animals, by all means, and raise them in ways that are both ethical and environmentally sound. But also treasure the cultural and historical bond between humans and domesticated animals. Historically speaking, they exist only because of the uses we have found for them, and preserving their existence means, in most cases, preserving the uses we have made for them. It will be a barren world if the herds and flocks disappear in favor of meat grown in a laboratory tank.
Rocket Dog
I can't stand PETA. Anyone just say "PETA" and a nerve has been struck. So sorry, major rant coming on:
Being apart of a ranching family, we hear plenty from them. Two, and even more so, being apart of a hunting family, including myself, PETA exagerates, and brings attention to the worst scenarios. They make stuff up. They edit facts out of their stories. I can't stand them. I find this story very hipocritical. Syako, is there a cat hissing and pissed off emoticon? RRRaaarrr! Insert here.
This really erks me the most because here they say they want to encourage humane and ethical animal eating. Hunting is actually very humane and ethical! If it weren't for PETA, and the stupid bad apple hunters, hunting wouldn't be in such a bad light. One, animals aren't in confinement they are free and wild. Most hunters have a strong desire to make the kill fast and painless. If anyone took a hunters safety course (illegal to hunt without) they would see that a quick and painless kill is absolutely the most important. Nature is the most ruthless killer when it comes to the death of animals.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that everyone should hunt. I also certainly understand not everyone can stomache killing animals either. There's definately nothing wrong with that.
I'm just pointing at the fact that they are now saying they want humane and ethical eating of animals. What????!
Ok, I feel better now.
1Let it out Hartsfull!
2I say most, because there are jerks (bad apple hunters) out there as in anything else.

Syako taught me.
10Absolute power, corrupts absolutely.
11I heard this on the news last night. And it took me a short while to get a few of the smilies just right
12hey harts, just wanted to let you know that the foxie person must have a "PETA" feed because the only time I really see her commenting is on articles about peta, fur, or anything else like that. She's extremely closed minded and will not allow people to have other opinions than her own. Hence, I do not even comment when she's around. It's really annoying actually and goes back to why people hate PETA in the first place...
13I know she is my heart is about to jump out of my chest I'm so pissed at the blanky blank blank blank.
My blog that I wrote, came from a posting of hers. That's why I wrote it. The things I said are actually to comments she said.
Thanks! For getting my attention!
:hugs:
14No problem. I've just been in a discussion with her about wearing fur (which I don't even wear, but it sure was fun to say I did) and it was just a mess and not worth it. Talk about dense.
15Those kind of people make me so mad. I don't care if people want to be vegan. I don't care if someone says, I don't want to be vegan because I don't like killing animals. I think I've been pretty clear about understanding that some can't handle the death of an animal for themselves to eat. It makes me angry though, when these people try to make judgement on others because they do.
16Hah, syako!
17I'm really surprised at how many people think humans are naturally vegetarian and we've just been forcing ourselves to eat meat. I guess those incisors are for tearing soybeans.
redegg!
18I just realized what I said earlier made no sense whatsoever. I meant, I don't care if people want to be vegan.
19Red I think that has to do with that book The Omnivores Dilemma... it was a bestseller, I considered reading it myself but then I read the reviews of it and so many people said it was biased and one sided, so I skipped it.
But the idea that people werent meant to eat meat is a pillar of veganism... I once had a chat with a vegan about why he chose that and he went on a tangent about how not only are we never supposed to eat meat, but we're also not supposed to do drink any milk after infancy...
Don't vegans not eat any fish either? Sooo... back in Mesopatamia and all that, we weren't supposed to be eating fish even then, but we did it cuz it was in vogue? Umm, don't think so. Loaves and fishes people!
20We discussed this in class last night! First time a majority of the class actually agreed with me on something. PETA Blows. Thank you for all your comments!!!!!!
21The whole not drinking milk thing stems from the fact that our bodies(past the age of two or something) no longer produce what we need to digest it properly.
PETA sucks. We all know this.
22That's the enzyme Lactase. Most people do however, except for those who are lactose (milk sugar) intloerant. They don't have the enzyme to break the sugar down.
23In Germany I believe, they don't drink milk. They say, milk is for babies. They don't eat corn either. My friend and her husband were stationed there and the landlord got mad at them when they were eating corn. She said, that he said, "People will think I am renting to livestock!" Or something like that. Itwas a long time ago, she told me.
Yes, Laura I second that! They do suck! I think everyone here knows how I feel about PETA. LOL
(crowd says, no no don't get her going again! ahhhhh!)
24I agree with you about PETA. Don't worry. You're not alone!
How can you not eat corn?!?!? My Dad has been to Germany a few times and he has never run into anything like that. Hmm. Of course, I think the times when he would talk to the Germans he was out in pubs. Maybe they're more laid back there..
Oh, and I have nothing against Germans. I'm 50% German myself.
25Well I can understand the thing about the corn. We dont digest corn .. eh sorry to be gross... but ever notice it comes out whole? Its not really good for animals either, I only give Brody special all natural food, made with no corn products.
Me I love corn on the cob, corn chips corn anything! I eat it all I dont really care.
26Gross!
27That's correct. Also, if we were just chew our food more it wouldn't come out whole.
Just saying..
28*if we were to just*
Oops.
29So, let me get this straight Laura, your dad goes to pubs, in Germany, and orders milk?
Hee hee, I know you're with me on this. Did I sound b****y still?
30I like your pretty "Come on, fess up." expression.
31Okies Laura, I just happend to read this again. Oopsey, You didn't sound like he ordered milk. It sounded like he ordered corn! LOL
I'm just being a hassler. I hope you know. You do know that right???
32Er, and the "fess up expression" I'm talking about your avatar. I not going to say anything more now, because this will be the forth in a row of ME. I look like a psycho talking to myself.
33I chew my food plenty.
34Oh, no, I was just saying that there have been really weird conversations that he has run into while he visited there. I thought something like that might have come up, since everyone knew that he was from Minnesota. I think the few times he went he traveled with a few guys from work, and they obviously stuck out.
Don't worry about offending me ever either. I take this site very lightheartedly, so no worries!
And I understood your comment about the look on my face in my avatar.
