I can't believe when I read this article. How about we let the man take office before we begin to name schools after him? And instead of worrying about putting a sign up, how about worrying about what is going on in the inside, with the students and the education of our youth. For those who do not know, Hempstead is ranking very low in NY in the state for education.

Hey.. Im from Lindenhurst.. That is really rediculous.. Its soo dumb that its more important to put a sign up when schools are failing... They should be worrying about how there school is doing and focusing on paying for things that are needed.. not stupid signs... ecspecially signs that some people might not even agree with, the sign is also being biased to other parties.. no offense to anyone...
1...like the prize being awarded before the actual contest has even begun! Unfortunately it is a very long fall from a pedestal.
2Well, these do seem to be unusual circumstances - the first black president! Maybe it will inspire the students and the teachers to do better?
3Brendel, that was my thought, too.
If there's a high percentage of minority students, perhaps they think it will serve as a daily motivation.
As a tangent, I fear that Obama has been overhyped to the point where even a hybrid of Lincoln, MLK and Mother Teresa couldn't live up to the expectations. I would feel s bit sorry for him, if he hadn't fed that hype and ridden it to victory.

I think it's a bit too early to be naming schools after the President-elect.
5i think that people are just proud of what he has achieved. it doesn't matter that he isn't president yet or not, just look how far this man has come. even if he didn't win the election, the fact that he even got the nomination was a huge deal. people are just proud of that, i think, and they should be allowed to express it however they want.
i do agree that they should be focusing on things other than signs, though. really now.
6It is predominately minorities, but if you want to inspire people then why not name the school after Governor Patterson who is not only the first African American Governor or New York but is also Legally blind!
I feel that he needs to do something to deserve the honor other then just getting elected. And I feel that way about both sides of the political isle.
Absolute power, corrupts absolutely.
7Colin Powell and Condi Rice have achieved more than Obama.
8Are there schools named after them?

Laine - They don't count, evidently. Condi Rice is one of the most inspiring women alive and the media just ignore all of her accomplishments.
9I think this is a little soon as well. It is a good point that he is inspiring to many, and particularly to young minorities, but like everyone else said, what about the other minorities that have made great achievements?
10Good point Laine.
11Ok, lets have a guess as to what American currency, bill or coin will have Obama's face on it(also denomination)? My guess will be the dollar coin. For how many years have they tried to get the American public to accept a dollar coin?
12lolbuttercup, another sign of my age, when I first met my wife they had a summer home in Lindenhurst.
