Civility and Tolerance in the Age of Obama
By Michelle Malkin
They told us if Barack Obama were elected, the nation would come together. Souls would be fixed. Spirits would be healed. Public discourse would be elevated. Welcome to civility and tolerance in the Age of Obama:
• Celebrity leech/trash blogger Perez Hilton took to the Internet and TV airwaves to humiliate a beauty pageant contestant who gave what he considered an "offensive" answer about gay marriage. Hilton, inexplicably serving as a judge for the Miss USA contest, asked Miss California, Carrie Prejean, whether she supported the legalization of gay marriage. Prejean respectfully answered: "I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised." President Obama, by the way, defines marriage the same way Prejean does.
No matter. Hilton immediately lambasted Prejean as a "dumb b*tch" in a viral YouTube video he taped after the pageant Sunday night. He apologized the next morning for the attack, then retracted his apology, then escalated his divisive rhetoric. On Tuesday afternoon, Hilton told an MSNBC female anchor that he was thinking of an even more vulgar epithet — the "c-word" — as he listened to Prejean's answer. The female anchor said nothing. Basking in his new role as thought and speech enforcer, Hilton told CNN's Larry King that beauty pageant contestants must bow to the tolerance mob: "Yes. I do expect Miss USA to be politically correct."
And apparently, the Miss USA organizers agree. Instead of apologizing for Hilton's vile behavior, the pageant director of the Miss California contest, Keith Lewis, sent a note to Hilton throwing Prejean under the bus: "I am personally saddened and hurt that Miss CA USA 2009 believes marriage rights belong only to a man and a woman. Religious beliefs have no place in politics in the Miss CA family."
But gutter profanity and misogyny do?
• At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill last week, former GOP Congressman Tom Tancredo came to speak against legislative proposals to provide illegal alien students in-state tuition discounts not available to law-abiding Americans and legal immigrant students. Protesters at the institution of higher learning responded by blocking Tancredo with massive banners and screaming, "No dialogue with hate." Adults in the room stood by while students smashed a window a few feet from where Tancredo stood. Physically threatened, Tancredo was forced to leave without delivering his remarks.
According to campus reports, for a week leftists had prepared to mount a speech-squelching demonstration. The same thuggish tactics have been used at Columbia University, Georgetown University and Michigan State University to shut down speakers who support strict immigration enforcement. The UNC administration apologized for the students' tantrum, but took no steps to examine its own culpability for fostering a climate of intellectual vandalism and intolerance.
• The nightly airwaves turned into a soft-porn cesspool last week as liberal journalists derided and slimed hundreds of thousands of Tea Party protesters across the country who oppose reckless taxing and spending by both major political parties. Award-winning CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, mimicking his bottom-of-the-barrel competitors at MSNBC, smugly indulged in sexual puns about "teabagging." MSNBC devoted the entire week to sophomoric sexual slang and innuendo with references to "nuts," Dick Armey and "full-throated" protesters.
And White House adviser David Axelrod calls the Tea Party folks "unhealthy"?
Speaking of unhealthy, angry white liberal actress Janeane Garofalo venomously played the race card: "It's about hating a black man in the White House. This is racism straight up and is nothing but a bunch of teabagging rednecks." The theme was echoed by Jeffrey Kimball, a professor emeritus of history at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, who castigated the "extreme right" for organizing against Obama because "he's black and he's liberal."
Tell that to the thousands of activists in South Carolina who practically booed and heckled white Republican Rep. Gresham Barrett off the stage at a Tea Party in Greenville last Friday night for supporting the trillion-dollar TARP and embracing the pork-laden stimulus law after voting against it. "Go home!" they shouted. The only color that mattered to protesters: the red ink of government debts.
But in the Age of Obama, there's no room for such nuance and inconvenient truths. A decent young woman is a "dumb b*tch" for holding the same view of marriage as the Obamessiah. A conservative campus speaker is bullied as a hatemonger by wild-eyed hatemongers. A grassroots movement is debased as a bunch of racist vulgarians by a media mob of racists and vulgarians. Civility and tolerance have taken a left-hand turn down a one-way street. So much for changing course.

Great column. Interesting that she draws the parallel between these events and bottom-lines the underlying sickness.
However, this problem originated well before anyone knew who Obama was.
I've watched a continuing deterioration in civility and common courtesy for perhaps 10 years now, if not a bit longer.
Remember the road rage freeway shootings we used to have?
(Maybe that was just a Los Angeles thing.)
Remember when *random* violence was shocking?
The problem now is that behavior has become accepted, and percolated into public discourse, and MSM.

true about the slow decline of civility. I think its hollywood, computers and parents failing in their job. How do you learn to be civil if all you do is communicate with a computer?

I'm really appalled at both Perez and Janeane. They are both so far off the mark. I personally have no problem with gay marriage or civil unions whatever they want to call them...but to blast someone and call them every name in the book just because their belief is different than yours is sickening. Shame on Perez. As for Janeane, she's just an idiot. She doesn't see or believe facts and I'm sure never will. I try to stay away from her work anyway, and will now do it more so. And, I read perezhilton, so I think i'm just going to have to stop visiting.

The man who speaks to you of sacrifice, speaks of slaves and masters. And intends to be the master.
4I have completely stopped reading Perez Hilton, and this Miss America issue has helped me become more clear about why I dislike him. Gossip can be light and funny, but he goes too far.
First, let me say, I disagree with Miss California. I believe love is love, between whoever is in love with one another. On the other hand, I applaud her for not lying about her beliefs. She gave her opinion, bravely and honestly. Also, she didn't indicate that she hated gays, or condemned them to hell. She simply answered the question.
The irony here is what a complete hypocrite Perez Hilton is. No matter how you slice it, he makes a living deliberatly hurting other people. He does this by spreading gossip, rumors, attacking celebrities who have wronged or snubbed him, outing people who aren't ready to be outed, etc. He does not hesitate to hurt others to his own benefit. But when he gets hurt, he screams. UNFAIR! What a tool. What a two-faced, shallow, empty-headed bully.
5And I agree about the decline in civility in our society. In an age of "anonymous" comments, people hide behind that veil and spew forth every bit of vile hatred that they can muster. They use that avenue to say exactly what they think, with no regard for anyone but their own amusement. It is really disturbing!
6Kris people get off on mean these days. The meaner the better. If PH got dumped off of a few invite lists he would cry himself to sleep. Instead the networks give him his airtime and he gets to admire himself over and over again.

Kris, I wish it were only that. It's not just anonymity (although that contributes).
IMO it's all the little things:
It's the car that won't let you merge on the freeway, or hogs the fast lane at 55.
It's the driver that pulls into the parking space next to you while your child is getting out of the car.
It's the SUV that parks in a compact spot next to you, or parks crookedly, and you cant' get into your car.
It's the horrendous level of customer service in so many places.
It's the person who parks his/her grocery cart in the middle of the aisle so that no one can bet past it. Or line-cutters at the deli or check-out.
It's cell phones in movie theaters, or two-year-olds in inappropriate, R-rated movies.
Wow, much pent-up frustration?

They sure do, Sam. Ever read the comments on his blog? It's like this group of people who go there every day just to be as deliberately foul and nonsensical as they possibly can. It's disturbing in that it makes you wonder if people in America are really that stupid.
9I'm with you, Laine! I totally agree with you.
10Agree Lain. Can I add in the men who feel that certain appendages give them the right to spread their legs and take up 2 seats on the subway.
I used to like e-online awful truth until he got so ugly during the election. I went cold turkey. I am now riding my world of negative people. If you are depressing or hurting me - BYE-BYE!

I was only able to read up to the Tancredo incident. I have to come back! But that makes me very angry! I feel like exploding.

I posted a bit about the Tancredo incident a few days ago, with raw video (IIRC).

Ugh, I hate when men sit like that!!
And I hate Perez Hilton. He was on tv saying he wasn't upset because she disagreed with him, but because she should have left politics out of it. Um, hello, you asked her a political question!
18Agreed Modus! I think it's crap to ask a poli question and then say it has no room there--or whatever the words he used. Also, the fact of asking views on something and then getting so irate over her answer is totally
.
What a jerk!

Perez is just... special. Think about the mind and heart of a person who decides he's going to do whatever it takes to make himself part of the A-list world. Naughty or nice, he's going to be famous. He acts so much like a person who was bullied or teased growing up (as a homosexual he probably was) and now he's making up for it by being a bully. And if he's not a bully to you already, and you're a celebrity who crosses him, watch out. So all those celebrities who are nice to him are probably only nice to him so he won't talk $hit about them. I just can't imagine going through life where I couldn't be sure if my friends really liked me for who I was, or just didn't want to make me mad!
20Well put Miss Kris!

Well, at least now you understand why people are upset about the recent misuse of the term.

harts, if it makes you feel any better, I also had to look up the term. It was new to me too.
29ya'll, i didn't know what it meant either. Then when i finally learned recently, i was like, why the hell would you ever do that?
30LOL Kris!
and yes Grandpa, that does make me feel better!

I don't understand the appeal of it. if there is any appeal. According to my best friend, teabagging shenanigans went on at her sister's wedding, after the ceremony. It was the groom and all of his friends. OK. WHY? How old are we? And didn't we just get married? Wedding night anyone? It's baffling.
33I first heard of this in the context of computer gaming. (I try to pay attention to that stuff, at least a little, having a teenaged son; although I didn't hear of this from him.) In that context, unless I'm really out of touch, it's something you do *to* a vanquished opponent to reinforce your superiority and humiliate him.

Oh, and of course, in that context it's only virtual and certainly less graphic and specific than in allegedly real life.

was the term widely used before SATC?

I would like to see that game, if it promotes "teabagging", then I would take it from him. What other denigrations are "celebrated" on that game?
37Grandpa, I didn't hear it from him. I heard it in some other game-related discussion some time ago; I don't even remember where. It's not an integral part of any games AFAIK, it's a player behavior.
Amazingly, I do visit other internet sites besides Sugar, and read actual printed materials, too.
As for the 16-y-o boy: Games are pretty carefully selected. His study center / computer is in the kitchen, which is in sight of the living room. My husband is pretty tech-savvy, and can monitor his history and cut off any questionable sites, or shut off his internet connection completely if he visits any risque sites (which has happened). Plus, his 18-y-o sister watches him like a hawk.

Good for you Lainetm.
I was frankly shocked at the thought that a teenage game-boy would
have such a thing. I had no reason to disbelieve, based on what I read about some of those games based on stealing cars, and the like.
39Gotta love big sisters.
40Grandpa, that kind of stuff doesn't enter the house. He mostly plays military and racing games. (Navy JROTC kid.)
skb, it's only because little brothers need the extra supervision.

The term has been around for a while. I knew about it before I hit high school (yeah, sad) which was about 9 years ago. Kids talk, hear things from their siblings, and do their own research..
42Well now I feel even more naive!

I spent some time looking at the meaning of some of the words that were new to me. What shocked me was the things folks seem to get into, and apparently enough of them to have it's own unique term.
44Evil

I guess I did not have enough of an evil imagination, since a few times My :jawdropped: Other times i was scratching my head, on how anyone could call that "enjoyable". The final thing was the things that would be done to humiliate a woman, why those women put up with it.
