President Barack Obama: America has been 'arrogant and dismissive' towards Europe
President Barack Obama has declared that America has "failed to appreciate Europe's leading role in the world" and has "shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive" towards its allies.

His speech in Strasbourg went further than any United States president in history in criticising his own country's action while standing on foreign soil. But he sought to use the comments, which amount to a mea culpa for recent American foreign policy, as leverage to alter European views of America and secure more troops for the war in Afghanistan
He declared that there had to be a fundamental shift on both sides of the Atlantic. "America is changing but it cannot be America alone that changes."
Barack Obama must preserve the special relationship
Addressing a crowd of some 2,000 mainly students from France and Germany, Mr Obama said: "In America, there is a failure to appreciate Europe's leading role in the world. "Instead of celebrating your dynamic union and seeking to partner with you to meet common challenges, there have been times where America has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive."
He then balanced this striking admission with a tough message to Europeans that blaming America and using its actions as an excuse to avoid tackling the global Islamist threat was unacceptable.
"But in Europe, there is an anti-Americanism that is at once casual, but can also be insidious. Instead of recognising the good that America so often does in the world, there have been times where Europeans choose to blame America for much of what is bad."
In a speech which his aides billed as a commitment to rebuild transatlantic relations by offering an olive branch directly to young Europeans, he offered himself as the figure who could bridge the gap that had grown over the eight years of President George W. Bush's administration.
"On both sides of the Atlantic, these attitudes have become all too common," he said. "They are not wise. They do not represent the truth. They threaten to widen the divide across the Atlantic and leave us both more isolated.
"They fail to acknowledge the fundamental truth that America cannot confront the challenges of this century alone, but that Europe cannot confront them without America."
During questions, Mr Obama, who was applauded frequently and had to choose between scores of young students clamouring to catch his eye, asked Americans to let French and Germans address him. "Do me a favour Americans," he said. "Wait till we get back home and I'll do a town hall there."
Although a central message was that he represented a clean break from his predecessor, Mr Obama – in a rare use of his Muslim middle name - emphasised that some of the problems Mr Bush had faced would not miraculously disappear.
"I think it is important for Europe to understand that even though I am president and George Bush is not president, al-Qaeda is still a threat and that we cannot pretend somehow that because Barack Hussein Obama got elected as president, suddenly everything's going to be OK," he said.
"It is going to be a very difficult challenge. Al Qaeda is still bent on carrying out terrorist activity. It is - you know, don't fool yourselves because some people say, 'Well, you know, if we changed our policies with respect to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, or if we were more respectful to the Muslim world, suddenly these organisations would stop threatening us.' That's just not the case."

And then he said:
"But in Europe, there is an anti-Americanism that is at once casual, but can also be insidious. Instead of recognising the good that America so often does in the world, there have been times where Europeans choose to blame America for much of what is bad."
2Not the point. He called us this on foreign soil. He never would have uttered those words on US soil. To call the people you lead arrogant is foolish and arrogant. Do you ever find flaw in him or is your worship blind?

Wow Sam.
4Wow.
Is your hatred of Obama so overwhelming that you've NEVER heard him say anything even slightly critical of us on American soil?
5What do we have to fear from self-criticism?
Do you think it'll hurt us with the world to admit to an occasional imperfection?
Why is it foolish for a leader say that "there have been times where America has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive"?
How is that CALLING us arrogant?
Is it okay to call out the Europeans for being anti-American and blaming us for everything bad?
I just wish that he could show his love for our country a little more often.
6I'm coming to realize that he wanted to lead this country not because he feels a great love for america and it's people but because he feels a great disdain towards what we represent. He hates this country so much he chose to lead it so he could CHANGE it.

The man who speaks to you of sacrifice, speaks of slaves and masters. And intends to be the master.
7I have to agree with him on this one. We as Americans do tend to have a dismissive attitude towards Europe. And Europeans do tend to blame America for many things wrong with the world. If he had said either of these things without the other statement, it would have been very bad. But he called us all out, together.
To be able to admit you are wrong is a great strength.
8Very well put, skb!
9there are many on here who listen to what Obama says, studies it, understands it and sees the hard job he has to do....
and when it was Bush, they just saw what they wanted to and dismissed all his words like trash.
10If he did something good i would give him credit. But to put down the people you lead is a great way to loose a following. I understand there are those who like to apologize for us and everything we think and do but we for a little over 200 years have managed to contribute to this planet in amazing ways including saving the EU twice from itself.
Self assessment and self criticism is one thing and is part of growing but to say to those who are not fond of us and have had a superiority complex is a whole other game. He is forgetting that he represents the people of the USA and not the world. it would be nice if for once he could sound proud of being an American vs. ashamed.
Cat your avatar - great lose

12Which might be a problem if this was about popularity, instead of about finding ways to get people of different countries to work together for the well-being and betterment of us all.
Are you saying Obama is NOT about popularity? And public insults don't bring people together.

I totally agree with you Sam and Cat. IMO he's again repeating the tired cliche' of "Blame Bush/Cheney" in an effort to vilify their leadership versus his leadership of "Change" which simply means Obama is an embarrassment to our country.
This country has repeatedly saved Europe from many disastrous outcomes costing thousands of US soldiers lives. We have nothing to be ashamed of.

Obama also said he "made very clear to the North Koreans that their missile launch is provocative. It puts enormous strains on the six-party talks and that they should stop the launch." I guess he means the word provocotive as irritating rather then the stimulating way most people define the word.
If a Republican would have said it the news media would be having a field day with his choice of words.
Guess I would like to hear him tell the people of this country what exactly we have done to show we have exhibited the behavior he called us out on or was it only Bus he was referring to?
Otherwise, it just appears to be more of America's love of every other culture and or religion NOT associated with the US.
15If we are arrogant and foolish, what does that say about his election?
It's interesting that he uses his middle name as a political tool, and only when it's convenient for him. If someone here had referred to him in that way, s/he would have been accused of underhanded politicking.
It fascinates me that his defenders--and I am not addressing anyone or anything on the Sugar site(s)--have gotten increasingly defensive....

Excuse me Lazy, but I'm not getting the provocative issue...
Provocative means tending or serving to provoke, OR inciting, stimulating, irritating. I would think a missile launch provokes.
17IMO Laine, his defenders are on the defensive because look at his record so far. Atrocious spending, embarrassing tax issues with so many appointees, lame on defense, socializing our nation & health care & now apologizing to Europe for our arrogance? Wow, so it's time to blame Bush again.

Let me see, if I can think of anything we have to be arrogant about in our dealings with our NATO allies. How about in Europe itself, there was genocide going on in the Balkans, Europe ignored it, until The U.S. got involved. How about Kuwait, it was invaded by a neighboring nation. Europe again sat back until the U.S. got involved. Who the hell has kept the sea lanes open, around the world, the U.S. Let me see, if there is a natural calamity of nature anywhere in the world. Who is expected to show up and provide relief? We spent our national wealth buiding and maintaing a military, that can provide support around the world, while Europe spend pennies. I think the Europeans have been sucking on the American teat for the last 50 years.
19Grandpa, you know how presumptuous we are.
20We dare to drive cars, have televisions and food, and heat our homes.
Homes which have indoor plumbing, no less!
Didn't BO say during the campaign that those behaviors are unreasonable?

LoL, no one wants to hear the truth.
23Steph, I know what the word provocative means. I am not saying that he didn't use it correctly as defined, but are you going to honestly tell me that word isn't normally used to express intrigue rather than irritation?
24The truth being what GScott?
25Among the general population you may have a good point Lazy, but when used by presidents, the word provocative almost always refers to someone stirring up trouble. Thanks.
26Bwahahaha!

I hadnt heard the rest of the quote so thanks for sharing Steph. It doesn't seem as bad to me having read the entire thing.
However, I think this is more posturing to get ready to blame more Bush if/when the stimulus doesn't work, GM bailouts don't work, etc etc.... I think what we see here is the set up of a safety net.
28For the past couple of decades the U.S. has been arrogant and dismissive. Not to say that can be applied to every person within a nation, but objectively, that how it's been. Same applies to other countries as well. I suppose it's just human nature, especially when people are more well off than others at the time. He only said what everyone else was thinking.
29I really don't agree with your comment at all GScott. I think Obama used a very poor choice of words to describe the country he represents. Arrogant and dismissive? He sounds more like he is describing himself IMO.

Even if he does think that and even if its true, are we really so naive as to think that our enemies won't play that footage on a loop and use it to justify their actions?
If he thinks that, he should just act accordingly, no need to acknowledge it, esp abroad. That's like being in a crowd of strangers and one of them saying "You're mom is a b*tch" and you saying "You're right, she is a b*tch"
You just DON'T say that, you might think it and behave like it, but you don't say it. Its just kinda tasteless.
Oh well, I don't think he was being malicious, just being Obama... when you talk forever about nothing eventually you say SOMETHINg wrong.
36I think she put an extra character in "skb9850". That "a" is right next to the "s" and could cause some erroneous keyboarding.
For any conservative regulars here who agree, I'm interested in why you agree.
I agree, though: You don't have to let every thought in your head fall out of your mouth. I *am* a b1tch (sometimes), but my family had better not say so publicly.

Well, I think we are pretty arrogant.
I like arrogance though, so its ok with me!
I think Bush was just very honest in putting the US's needs #1 and not apoligizing for that. I think he wasn't eloquent enough to pretty it up and blow some smoke to make it seem like we were doing it for the good of the world, instead of just for ourselves. But I like that, so I have no problem with it. I'm not a fan of the sugar coating and talking in circles.
Also, ya know, we DO have the best country ever and that comes with some arrogance. There's a reason so many people want to live in America and there's a reason its called the "American dream" and not the "French dream", for example.
However, I think there are a lot of good cues we could take from Europe, that we SHOULD take from Europe but it seems we're a bit too full of ourselves to sometimes admit someone else might be doing something better. Or we're just stuck in our ways. Who knows.
38I think really we can be arrogant in our "Americanism" but I think Europe can be arrogant in thei "Anti-Americanism" if that makes sense... I don't think they take many cues from us and you can't convince me we don't do a lot of things better than they do.
39If it's earned, it's pride.
If it's not, it's arrogance.
If you want a definition of "dismissive", though: look at France.
The are the epitome of cultural arrogance.
I agree that our culture has deteriorated significantly over the last 25-30 years. That has been a global problem, though. Multiculturalism means never criticizing anyone else's beliefs or behaviors.

Right on Lainetm, and an excellent point with regards to France, I get annoyed when you gals make these excellent points before I do.
41Maybe Bush would have come across as more eloquent if he too had a pet teleprompter that followed him every where he went.

Barry had a little tele,
Little lamb, little tele,
Barry had a little tele,
Its case was white as snow
And everywhere that Barry went, Barry went, Barry went, Everywhere that Barry went The tele was sure to go
It followed him to work one day Work one day, Work one day It followed him to work one day Which was against the rules.
It made the press laugh and play, Laugh and play, laugh and play, It made the press laugh and play To see a tele at work
And so the people turned it out, Turned it out, turned it out, And so the people turned it out, But still it lingered near
And waited patiently about, Patiently about, patiently about, And waited patiently about, Till Barry did appear
"Why does the tele love Barry so?" Love Barry so? Love Barry so? "Why does the tele love Barry so? "The eager press did cry
"Why, Barry loves the tele, you know." Loves the tele, you know, loves the tele, you know
"Why, Barry loves the tele, you know."
The press & chattering class did reply

Lain, maybe that is why I love you all the way I do.
47Sorry, I was busy yesterday and haven't had a chance to get back here and explain.
The reason I don't feel the comment was all that bad is because of diplomacy. He was trying to get more troups for Afganistan. Going up to all the leaders of Europe and saying "we need more troups, step up to the plate Europe!" was not going to do any good. By saying we are arrogant and then calling out Europe he was trying to get the support through humility. Obviously since he's not getting the support he wanted, it didn't work and is having a backlash in the US conservative population.
Don't get me wrong, I would rather not hear him call us arrogant and dismissive. But when the rest of the world expects us to handle all the natural disasters and other problems, it's easy to see how we can be arrogant.
48skb, wouldn't it have been a better approach to point out that this is a global concern and we are all on the same team?
Saying "We suck, why don't you help?" doesn't seem to me to be very effective PR.
When someone already dislikes you, it's probably better not to agree with them. JMHO
