Barack Obama to release up to 2,000 photographs of prisoner abuse
President Barack Obama is to release up to 2,000 photographs of alleged abuse at American prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan in a move which will fuel the uproar over CIA interrogation memos.

The decision to make public the images sought in a legal action by the American Civil Liberties Union comes amid a political firestorm over alleged torture of detainees under President George W. Bush.
Some of the photographs, which will be released on May 28, are said to show American service personnel intimidating prisoners by pointing weapons at them, according to officials. The photographs relate to more than 400 separate cases involving alleged prisoner abuse between 2001 and 2005.
Descriptions of some of the alleged abuse photographs include:
* A prisoner pushed up against a wall as military guards or interrogators appear to threaten to sexually assault him with a broomstick
* Female soldiers posing with hooded, shackled prisoners who were stripped naked
* Hooded prisoners on transport planes with Playboy magazines opened to pictures of nude women on their laps
The Pentagon fears a backlash in the Middle East similar to the one provoked by pictures from Abu Ghraib prison, near Baghdad, in 2004 which became emblematic of American mistakes in Iraq.
Amrit Singh, an ACLU lawyer, said that "these photographs provide visual proof that prisoner abuse by US personnel was not aberrational but widespread, reaching far beyond the walls of Abu Ghraib".
The Bush administration had resisted releasing the images to the public, contending that the disclosure would fuel anti-American feeling and violate US obligations towards prisoners under the Geneva Conventions. Several people have already been tried at courts martial for using guns to threaten detainees in cases connected to the photographs.
Mr Obama's decision could undercut his struggle to persuade Congress not to institute a "truth commission" to investigate alleged prisoner abuse and force former Bush administration officials to testify and account for their actions and advice.
Momentum for a major public inquiry was dramatically increased when Mr Obama released four memos last week written by three officials from Mr Bush's Justice Department.
Running to 126 pages, they contained the legal rationale for the CIA's methods of extracting information from al-Qaeda suspects used between 2002 and 2005.
The methods, eventually prohibited by the Bush administration, included sleep deprivation for up to 11 days, forced nudity and stress positions as well as "waterboarding", a form of simulated drowning in which "water is continuously applied from a height of 12 to 24 inches" for "20 to 40 seconds".
In the memos, it was revealed that the waterboarding technique had been used 266 times on Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Abu Zubaydah, two senior al-Qaeda prisoners.
Other possible disclosures as a result of the ACLU legal action include transcripts of prisoner interrogations, a secret CIA inspector general's report and materials from a Justice Department investigation into detainee abuse.
The Obama administration, under fierce pressure from the Left and some congressional Democrats, faces a tough decision about whether to release the information in full, redact parts of it or continue the Bush administration's court battle to keep it secret.
Mr Obama's decision to release the four memos came after the most divisive argument yet in his young administration, which passes the landmark of 100 days next Wednesday.
He was opposed by Leon Panetta, his CIA chief, who argued for redactions of key passages, and John Brennan, a former senior CIA official who is now the top counter-terrorism adviser at the White House.
The most enthusiastic support for the release came from Eric Holder, Mr Obama's attorney general and the man who will decide whether former Bush administration officials should face prosecution, and his legal counsel Gregory Craig.
Robert Gates, the Pentagon chief, and Admiral Dennis Blair, Director of National Intelligence, are said to have supported Mr Obama with some reservations. It subsequently emerged that Adml Blair had briefed his staff that some important information was extracted from prisoners during harsh interrogations.

Ok, how exactly does this go toward his stated goal of improving our nation's standing in the world? This is an unnecessary political stunt of the worst kind.
3he is a liar. if he does this it will be to kowtow to the foreign leaders he has already bowed before and offered up our American pride to.
4Why is Holder salivating at all of this? He worked pardons for terrorists before, does he hate this country that much?

He needs to be impeached (or worse) for treason. This entire joke of an administration just sucks.

Every American life is now in extreme danger as a result of this Administration.

Borack Obama, is putting all Americans in jeopardy around the world. The man has no sense at all. Consequences be damned as far as he is concerned it seems.
8Everyone: Please share this story and try to get some grassroots outrage started!
9This just staggers all common sense.

Talk about a two-faced person! He states we need to move forward and not prosecute the previous administration and then releases memos and photos specifically designed to stir up everyone into yelling for prosecution. There are memos available that show the good information that came from some of these sessions, but so far Obama and company are doing what they can to keep those under wraps. His ultimate goal is to have the previous administation prosecuted. By releasing the memos and photos, the people are going to be whipped into a frenzy and calling for action. Then Obama will bow to the will of the people.
My opinion is this is going to be the way he operates for everything. Take guns for example. He stated he doesn't want to take guns away from anyone during the campaign. But when he's ready to start pushing through legislation to do exactly that, we will see all kinds of things in the media and from other sources showing one side only - the side that makes it look like guns and gun owners are horrible things. Then he will say he's doing the will of the people when he signs the laws that take our guns away.
12OMG

13Seriously?
This guy is something else.
In four years it will be his turn. Gibbs is now saying maybe torture was helpful. Its not like we grabbed swedes of the street and interrogated them, these were people used to living in a sh*t hole that were attacking US troops and civilians that needed persuasion to speak. They released a video of a Saudi prince this week; he is torturing someone with the help of the police for supposedly cheating him in a deal. What he did gets a blip on the monitor, what we did to keep this country safe is now a maelstrom thanks to this schmuck who was breast fed by ayers and wright.

If he's going to release images that he should be releasing some data that shows how many planned attacks have been stopped.
15You are so right Pam.
16You are so right!
he should also release the documents showing how Pelosi wanted the CIA to get more info and acknowledging the use of "torture"

Sam:
20I'd love to see those documents released Sam. Somehow I don't think it will happen though.
21Shouldn't we be more outraged that America utilizes torture...if Bush was ok with using torture to obviously get us know where then there wouldn't be any photos to release. I mean really where has water boarding gotten us, our enemeies our still out ther I don't feel safe and the economy is in the toilet!
22If it was acceptable to take the actions that led to the photographs, why keep them secret? Why not show the world what we're willing to do if you cross us?
23luvleo, have you been watching the news? the interrogation methods saved LA from a terrorist attack and American dying. Congress knew about the methods in use.

28But we don't care about that or there never would have been anything to photograph.
Dear God, we are dealing with people who have no regard for human life. Just two words - Daniel Pearl. Obama is evil and/or insane. I wasn't wild about Bush during his second term, but he and his adminstration do not deserve this kind of treatment. We were safe for 7 years under his administration, and no one can take that away from him. Think of how many people it saved...it was thousands. But, they'll never mention that. It really does show how much Obama hates our country. Also, they're NOT soldiers, they were enemy combatants...so they are NOT even covered under the Geneva Convention.
29Regardless of what you think about torture or who's guilty of what, releasing these photos is a very bad idea. Obama is just showing more and more weakness. He sucks.

You do have to wonder what the real motivation is to release photo's like this. I wonder how much of it is simply to divert the public's attention. If our attention is focused on this we won't be aware of other things that are happening today that we should be concerned about.
31I agree with many of you. Obama is a serious hater of the US. He keeps talking of how "we're moving forward" and all this "looking to the future" nonsense, but he can't get his @ss out of the past. He's so stuck on looking good to our enemies that he's endangering the lives of american citizens. and amen to what Beach Barbie said "Also, they're NOT soldiers, they were enemy combatants...so they are NOT even covered under the Geneva Convention." They're terrorists, not soldiers of a country, they aren't covered. AND if they torture our men and women, why should we NOT do the same to them if they aren't covered under the convention. Some people just value the lives of TERRORISTS more than our soldiers. Plain and simple. And those okay with the release of these images are those people. It sickens me to know we have people like this in america okay with our countrymen dying and being killed but NO! DON'T HURT THE TERRORISTS!

I am talking about you caring about it. and since your okay with releasing the photos, you dont care about the geneva convention and therefore have no arguement about us "violating" it.

36That's right. Waterboarding is pointless torture.

Tsk tsk tsk. Wow. All I can say is, I think the current administration is not doing the right thing by releasing those photographs. I strongly disagree to this action. I think it's all part of dirty politic game and they're hoping that this can turn into positive PR result for the current administration's 'change' movement/path (by tarnishing even more the past one).
They deliberately picked and chose the things to release in regard of this torture issue. They refused to release the successful result (information gathered)--the correct and false ones both--how about release all of the information and let the public decide for themselves, instead of picking the ones that will incite anger toward the past administration even more.
I think they're seriously going forward to get people from past administrations prosecuted (working up toward the big figures like Bush, Cheney, etc) and trying to incite enough pitchforks, public anger toward the past administration (like the current hatred by many isn't enough already). It's another theatrical staging toward diverting public attention during hard economy and uncertain time with our foreign relationship.
And the Congress have selective memory too, tsk tsk tsk. Both (Democrats and Republicans) were around when most of these people were 'tortured' and some of them, including Pelosi was briefed upon the techniques.
The wheel of power will keep on turning, the current administration may be democrats, but what's going to happen when the republicans go back on the administration again in the future (and it may even be sooner than the dems want), and if they want to turn around and do the same thing? The government seriously needs to fix themselves, and stop playing like this.
*Unconditional love is a beautiful thing, just be sure to give it AFTER your conditions have been met.*
39We shouldn't waterboard them, we should be kind and treat them the way they treat the innocent civilians they capture, like Daniel Pearl.

Brooke and Pam, thank you.
Yes, and it does suck (actually we're seeing the big grand plan of things that's been going on for many years. And every single day is another mind-blowing "WTF, is he doing?" Anyway, on a happy note, it almost looks like Hart is singing 'Obama sucks..' to the waltz, The Blue Danube, by Strauss Jr.
Seriously, look at it.
Also, enjoy your family and lifestyles now and don't take a day for granted. (I think we're going to see some really bad sh*t in OUR lifetimes.) Normally, I'm a really optimistic person. And I do have a lot of hope left...I'll always have hope for our country. I would die for our country if it would make everything better...like our forefathers intended it to be. And we had no more Federal Reserve..it's as federal as federal express...but do get me started on that subject. (There's a poll idea...Would you die for your country?)
